Abstract

This book 7" x 6¾" was reedited and republished in 1991 after a first edition was done in 1990 for the exhibit that appeared in Karlsruhe in 1990 and Leipzig in 1991. The book is appropriately thoroughly bilingual. Nothing appears in only one of the two languages. After an introduction on Grandville, there are major sections on the "Metamorphoses du Jour" (18-30); on the fables (31-103); and on "Scenes from the Public Life of Animals" (105-127). There follow indices of illustrations and texts, a bibliography, and a T of C in each language. The fable section is rich in texts and illustrations. In addition to the delightful Grandville illustrations, both black-and-white and colored, there are some lovely little bunnies that appear as decorations at various places in the book, including halves on each of the last two pages. They are also on the endpapers.
