Abstract
I have worked my way back from a 1947 to a 1933 and now to a 1926 first printing of this lovely book. This copy is in only fair condition, with loose covers and pages. This printing lacks the illustration on the back cover of both the 1933 and 1947 printings. It also lacks the colored endpapers in the 1933 printing. As I wrote earlier, this book is special, I believe, for its twelve excellent full-page colored illustrations, all dated 1926 and all present here in good condition. Are they gouaches? I'll list them here: FC (9), WL (19), TMCM (29), OR (35), LM (43), MSA (53), TT (65), "The Little Fish" (71), "The Deer Gazing in the Water" (81), MM (91), OF (105), and "The Divided Oyster" (112). There are also good smaller black-and-white line drawings, of which the best might be those on 80 and 104. There is a T of C at the back. The milkmaid's can here is unbreakable. The pictorial paste-on front-cover shows La Fontaine with animals featured in these fables, while people from these fables are in the background.
