The purpose of this investigation is to show how the Nebraska Territory and its people between 1861 and 1867 were affected by the civil War and the political and economic issues of the period. Attitudes and reactions on the frontier were shaped by Territorial politics, federal legislation, economic developments in the far West, and by the war itself. Regardless of political upheaval that eventually prompted it to agitate for state organization in 1864 to 1867, its marvelous internal growth and resultant prosperity will be given due consideration as well as the effect of outside forces upon the settlers. It was a time when the length and breadth of our country was sounded for its loyalty to the union, and Nebraska was not found wanting.en_US
