Abstract

This volume of 685 pages includes, as the Note de l'Éditeur points out (671), the three editions of La Fontaine's fables: six books in 1668 (in this collection); five books in 1678 and 1679; and the twelfth book in 1694. This book is not a facsimile, though it does claim to be the first to reproduce Chauveau's illustrations in their original format: "Première reproduction intégrale au format des vignettes de François Chauveau gravées par l'artiste" (pre-title-page). I have done a quick comparison of the quality of the illustrations. Nothing I have found is as sharp as the original 1668 edition. A 1948 rendering by Les Bibliolatres de France comes is second-to-best. This present edition might tie for third with a 1930 facsimile by Firmin-Didot in the collection. Inscribed by Fred Schreiby in New York in 1959. 5½" x 7¾". There is both an AI and a T of C at the close of the volume, after its 685 pages.
