INTRODUCTION|The American system of trial by jury represents democracy at its best. While most countries employ persons thoroughly versed in the law to pass on the guilt or innocence of criminal defendants, the American system pulls twelve ordinary people off the street, presents them with the evidence against the defendant, and then locks them in a room until they come to an agreement on guilt or innocence.
