Abstract

This hardbound book, 8¾" square and 32 pages long, may be more a pourquoi story than a fable. A blackbird wants colorful wings and sets off to the sun to get them. Hurt along the way, he needs help. After several travelers refuse help, a boy brings him to his family and, in time, the bird is healed and can fly again. He returns home "no longer longing for a new set of wings." He awakens the next morning to find a lovely patch of red and gold on his wings. "His black wings had transformed from the kindness he'd found." There is magic here that is unusual for a fable. "Even a small bird can be changed by a good deed": that is true whatever genre the story fits best. Colorful romantic illustrations fill each pair of pages.
