Abstract

Here is the second volume of an inexpensive but lovely four-volume set, perhaps first done with other curators in 1958; at any rate there is a copyright of that date included. This is a serious effort. I am particularly impressed with Jadoux-Renaud's well chosen and well designed small woodcuts. There is one for almost every fable here in La Fontaine's last six books. Readers might be surprised by the book's organization since La Fontaine's Books 7 through 11 are called rather "Première," "Deuxième," etc., while La Fontaine's Book 12 is labelled "Livre Septième." Notes explain that this organization reflects nomenclature as the works originally appeared. The closing T of C relates these surprising titles to modern numbers for the books. There is also a closing AI. Among the best of the woodcuts here are "Coach and Fly" (30); "The Women and the Secret" (60); "The Ass and the Dog" (82); "The Oyster and the Litigants" (118); and "The Old Man and the Three Youths" (191, 192). There are again occasional tailpieces. The beginning of each of La Fontaine's books is marked with Chauveau's original illustration for the first fable in the book.
