Abstract
Here is the first of two volumes. First published by Giulio Einaudi Editore in 1956 and picked up by Mondadori in 1968. This is the twelfth Mondadori printing. I have long hesitated over these two volumes, convinced that they did not belong in this collection. As I finally took them in hand, I first noticed that these are two volumes of a single publication, not duplicate copies of the same book. Even their cover illustrations are different. I had picked up from Calvino's English "Italian Fables" that that volume actually contains one fable, "The Palace Mouse and the Field Mouse." I tried in vain to find it in these two volumes. In the process, I finally noticed that in the introduction there are six pages (37-42) offering dramatic full-page illustrations of MSA! This book belongs after all in the collection!
