Abstract

This pamphlet is a second part of a standard German school text presenting some 22 French fables on 84 pages. About 5" x 7½". The fables are divided into "plants," "objects," and "people." The general approach is to present a French fable and then to offer significant commentary, perhaps including a German version or other fables for comparison. At the back of the pamphlet is an extensive vocabulary for each fable. La Fontaine has by far the majority of texts presented here. Other authors here include Lachambeaudie, Dupuis, Joliveau, Florian, Molière, and de Vigneulles. I was happy to notice a French imitation of Pfeffel in "Les épis vides" (13) by Ratisbonne. As in the first volume, a method employed here is "Nachdichtung" (9), a cherished memory of mine from the Goethe-Institut. This volume adds some pages on La Fontaine, other French fabulists, and French versification.
