Abstract

The increasing number of syphilis cases being reported by health offices throughout the United States has stimulated interest in the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of this disease. There are presently available a variety of serological tests for use in the diagnosis of syphilis. However, each of these diagnostic tests lacks one or more desirable feature in its performance; such as speed, accuracy, simplicity and convenience. In addition these tests require one or more pieces of equipment for their performance. Invariably there is need for a water bath, microscope, rotator and centrifuge, as well as equipment needed for antigen preparations. | In the clinical laboratory there are usually a great many serological specimens to be screened for the detection of the syphilitic antibody. The need for a rapid, simple, accurate test for screening these specimens is evident. An attempt is made in this paper to perfect a test which will eliminate most of the undesirable features of a screening test, and at the same time, retain the desirable features.
