INTRODUCTION|A statute of limitations identifies the period of time during which a potential plaintiff may bring an action. The statutory period generally begins to run as soon as the cause of action "accrues" and continues for an arbitrary length of time. State legislatures are empowered to determine the number of years a cause of action will continue to survive.
