Abstract

Gheeraerts originally illustrated "De Waarachtige Fabulen der Dieren" (True Animal Fables), published by Pieter de Clerck in 1567 in Bruges. The first Dutch version, "Vorstelyicke Warande der Dieren," was published by Dirck Pietersz Pers in 1617 in Amsterdam. Here, on some 127 pages, are sixty of Gheeraerts' images on the right-hand pages with Dutch verse on the left-hand page. Sadly, the images do not come through as distinctly as they do elsewhere, e.g., in "A Moral Fable-Talk" from Arion Press in 1987. That book is three years later and perhaps seven times as expensive. Thus the most helpful illustration here may be the colored version of "The Fox and the Eagle" on the dust-jacket. There is a T of C at the front. The covers are leatherette.
