dc.description.abstractStruck and Mitchell (l) have reported the production of severe hemolytic anenia In dogs by the administration of methylene blue, in vitro studies by these workers (2, 3, 4) have disclosed radical alterations In carbohydrate metabolism of erythrocytes In the presence of methylene blue. They have assumed that the hemolysis observed in vivo is a manifestation of the alteration of glucose metabolism brought about by the dye. | Because workers have reported the production of anemia by anticholinesterases (6, 8), and Augustinsson has published results which show methylene blue to be a potent inhibitor of cholinesterase (5), It became desirable to determine the significance of this anticholinesterase action In the production of anemia by the dye.
