Abstract

This lovely book is in wretched condition but is oh so beautiful. Bodemann has it thirteenth in line in its family, but also notes that the etchings follow Oudry into the details. These 110 illustrations are a half-page in size and lovely to behold, starting with the frontispiece of Aesop looking up to La Fontaine, not vice versa. I cannot sense the order of fables here. An AI at the back of the book's 461 pages lists not only each fable's page number here but its book and number in La Fontaine's original order. This is one of those cases where the condition of the book and the luck of the draw on eBay allows a searcher like me to get a very lucky find!
