Abstract

Here is the better of two better copies of a book already brought into the collection a year earlier from Richard Sharp Books, Kent, UK, through eBay. Both of these copies were printed by the printer listed by Bodemann for #218.1, L.E. Herhan, not Mame as was that copy found earlier. As I noted then, Renouard published two distinct editions of Florian in the year 1812. This is the edition with 110 lithographs to match Florian's 110 fables. It has some 246 pages, whereas the other had 226. A good contrast of the two books' approaches to illustration comes with II 1, "The Mother, the Child, and the Opossums." I find these illustrations, uniform in size, strong and dramatic. They did not suffer, as did those in the other edition, from overprinting! Neither of these copies has a frontispiece. I wonder if Bodemann #218.1 is accurate in that regard. This copy was sold by Berard and Mondon in New York. It has a black leather background behind the title on its spine. It is unusual to find two almost identical books at the same dealer at the same time.
