Abstract

Problem: Trauma is a prevalent experience that can significantly impact health outcomes. Trauma-informed care (TIC) emphasizes empathy, trust, understanding, and patience to prevent re-traumatization and to meet patients’ physical, psychological, and emotional needs. Without proper training in TIC, patients may experience decreased satisfaction, loss of trust, and poorer outcomes. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine and synthesize current literature to determine the most effective strategies for increasing nurses’ confidence in utilizing TIC in clinical practice. Search Strategy: A literature review was conducted using EBSCOhost and Google Scholar. Search terms included trauma-informed care, nursing, and education. Articles published in English between 2020 and 2025 were included. Studies reviewed consisted of systematic reviews, quasi-experimental designs, and mixed-methods research. Results of literature search: The literature demonstrated consistent evidence supporting TIC education as a means of improving nurses’ confidence and competence. Findings revealed that TIC education enhances communication skills, promotes patient trust, increases satisfaction, and fosters a safe environment for care. Synthesis of evidence: The literature revealed there is a lack of TIC training to nurses taking care of patients. Building nurses’ confidence in TIC practices is essential to improve the quality of care, strengthen therapeutic relationships, and promote patient healing. Implications for practice: The literature supports the integration of TIC training into nursing curricula and continuing education. My recommendation is implementing TIC education into continuing education for all nurses to strengthen confidence and improve patient outcomes.
