As the seller wrote, "Fine copy in the original color-printed, stiff-card wrappers. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. 173 pages." The bulk of this paperback book is a surprising array of paintings from the late 19th century and early 20th of La Fontaine's fables. The paintings appear on right-hand pages from 28-143, with explanatory remarks on the left. The paintings are followed by short sections on books and tapestries. The artists are presented alphabetically. Eleven of the paintings are by Jules-Elie Delaunay. I am surprised to find a painting by Doré, whom I have known more for his black-and-white work. It does not surprise me that Doré's painting is "The Eagle and the Magpie" (55), dark in its theme and in his presentation of it. For surprising presentations of scenes, look at "The Shepherd and the Sea" by Clairin (29); "The Two Cocks" by Delaunay (47); GA by Gervex (63); "The Ass and the Lapdog" by Jacquemart (77); "The Priest and the Dead Man" by Lami (85); and "The Fox and the Cat" by Penne (107). The book section concentrates on Fessard and Thibaudet. There is an AI at the back. Early parts of the book offer French translations paralleling the Portuguese.
