Abstract

Here is a curiosity. The Bergisches Museum in Bergisch Gladbach seems to have come to possess a number of wall hangings from schools and classrooms before modern media took over the function of illustrating stories and other school material. Here is the catalogue of an exhibit of these presented in 1993. This 76-page booklet is rich in black-and-white photographs of these hangings. The textual framework for these many photographs comes from three written pieces. Carl Cüppers writes the preface inviting readers and visitors to allow themselves to be taken back to their early school years and enjoy the experience again! Prof. Reinhard Stach offers the article "Fabeln für Schule und Haus." Unfortunately for our collection's purpose, the chief source of fables is Speckter and Hey. The only representative I find from more Aesopic fables is a lovely painting by Käthe Olshausen-Schönberger (Leipzig, 1922) of FC. The third writing is the title-article by Ursula Kolloch, which seems to concentrate quite exclusively on Märchen. The booklet's cover is a colored illustration of the preparation for the hanging of Renard. I am sorry that I missed this exhibit!
