Abstract
As I wrote about Voume 1, this pair of volumes is a delight -- a beautifully produced presentation in large format of one of my favorite La Fontaine illustrators. Our collection has a wide variety of Effel's work but apparently nothing as early as this. Aufbau and Rowohlt have editions in 1955 with apparently 36 full illustrations. The Gutenberg Book Guild has an edition in the same year. We have Hungarian (1977/82) and Czech (1983) editions. This limited, numbered edition is not in Bodemann, whose #475 includes Rowohlt in 1954 and Aufbau in 1955. "Jean Effel" is a nom-de-plume for François Lejeune (1908-1992), picking up on the initials of his first and last names. Searching on the web finds only one or two copies of this book, generally not available now, originally distributed exclusively to the Compagnons des Artes Graphiques. As in the first volume, I find 18 full-page colored illustrations -- glorious illustrations! -- in this second volume. There are also a number of repeated monochrome designs. A delight! Uncut pages. 8½" x 10½". 259 pages.
