Abstract

This essay sheds light on the misconception that Catholicism is an essential characteristic to Italian/American and, hence, Italian identity. Through a brief examination of the demographic make-up of Italy’s population, and in conversation with scholars such as Richard Alba, Joseph Varacalli, Rudy Vecoli, and others, Tamburri demonstrates that Catholicism, while dominant in numbers, is not a sine qua non regarding Italian/American identity.|Keywords: religion, identity, Catholicism, immigration, community, Italian history
