Abstract
A steady volume of patient services, the inauguration of initial steps towards realization of a new School of Nursing and Educational building and an honor award from the Creighton University for its Administrator highlighted another year of service to the community by Creighton Memorial St. Joseph's Hospital as well as of progress within the institution.
For the third consecutive year, gross services rendered by St. Joseph's exceeded the $4,000,000 mark. Clinic and Courtesy allowance services increased more than 41% over 1958, and, for the first time in the history of the institution, topped the half-million dollar mark.
Plans for a new School of Nursing took their- first step towards reality in 1959 when the Sisters of St. Francis made the initial application for Hill-Burton Fund assistance in erection of a new structure.
A completely new service area in the Hospital's Maternity Department went into operation as St. Joseph's re-opened that division in July after extensive remodeling, becoming the first hospital in the mid-west to adopt the modern concept of small units, each nursery with a capacity of eight babies being an entity within itself.
Resignation of Dr. Frederick G. Gillick, in May, as Dean of the Creighton University School of Medicine and Chief of the Medical Staff of St. Joseph's was followed by the appointment, to the combined posts, of Dr. Richard L. Egan who had been Assistant Dean of the school since 1954» Dr. Gillick had held the position since August, 1951.
