Abstract

I have two copies of this lovely little volume, but they are in poor condition. Now I have been lucky enough to find this two-volume work in good condition and apparently complete, including, for example, the MM frontispiece to this second volume. The volumes are small in size, 3½ x 5½. As Bodemann suggests, the illustrations here tend to reduce the detail of Oudry's backgrounds. The other engravings are at 31, 54, 68, 94, 108, 125, 146, 156, 203, 214, and 246. The Bear and the Gardener at 54 is a delight! Accurate depiction of animals is not one of the strengths of this visual artist! As I wrote earlier, this lovely little pair of volumes seems to be a reprinting of Bodemann #135.11, published in 1802.
