In 1946 Arbuzov and Abramov reported the formation of a symmetrical tetraester, tetraethyl 1,1,2,2-ethane- tetracarboxylate, in the reaction of equimolar quantities of sodium diethyl phosohite and diethyl bromomalonate. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of the reaction.
