Abstract

Here is a set of large (11ΒΌ" x 15") folios presenting eleven fables and five woodcuts. The first illustration presents a strong group of animals with emphasis on their eyes. The second explores a bat; I believe that the fable is "The Battle of the Birds and Beasts." CJ, the third illustration, is among the strongest and simplest. FC is next, with a rather small "roec" but a very attentive fox. The finale is a peacock that bursts off the page! Strong work! I include here Peter Everaers' comment: "Uit de Middelnederlandse fabelbundel Esopet. Brugge, Renaat Bosschaert, 1979. Original paper cover with flaps, (32) pages, of which 16 printed in folio. Ca. 38 x 28,5 cm. Eleven fables with five wood engravings signed by Bosschaert, printed directly from the blocks. With an introduction by Karel Van Isacker. Edition of 140 numbered and signed copies (this is number 26/140; 20 not for sale) on "velijn van Arges" with watermark and scooped edges; set from various types of old letters and printed on the hand press in red and black. With a signed dedication by the artist. Cover slightly used; nice copy.
