Abstract
I have long hoped for this book. A reduction in price gave me the spurt I needed to go for it. It is gorgeous! The best part is the calligraphy of animals done with calligraphic lines. Three of them appear at the bottom of the title-page, while individual others show up at the bottom of some of the nineteen pages given each to one fable: title, illustration; text, and calligraphy play at the bottom of the page. Sometimes the calligraphic play at the page bottom is non-figural. Bodemann notes political allusions in the fables' texts, as one might expect in an edition dedicated to Napoleon. "Kalligraphischer Schmuck z.T. figürlich….Tierzeichnungen aus einer Linie." She also notes that the illustrations themselves regularly feature ruins, gnarled trees, and animals with moving facial expressions. This treasure is a star in our collection! 13" x 19½".
