Abstract
First Paragraph
We have often been told of the value of what are generally called trifles. We know that very great things often depend upon very small ones, that, for example, the lives of many people and the safety of tons of precious merchandise may be endangered by the neglect of a belt on a bridge, and that a spark may cause the conflagration of a city or of miles of forest lands.
