As so often, I thought I was buying a duplicate of a book I already have. As so often, I was wrong. This is a dated 1871 copy, whereas the book I have had for 23 years is a later undated copy, perhaps from about 1910. Though this book has suffered from shrinkage of the cover around the binding, it is internally bright and in excellent condition -- a far better specimen than the later copy! As I wrote about that copy, I had not been aware that there was a classic Monvel in English. A real find! Hobbs (108) tells the story that Crane had submitted a fable book to the SPCK, which rejected it and created this import. Look for the date after the French publisher on the last T of C page.
