Creighton Center for Service and Justice Service and Justice Trips

Abstract

Almost ten percent of Creighton undergraduate students now participate in the CCSJ Fall and Spring Break Service Trips Program each year. In the Jesuit tradition, students seek out Service & Justice Trips, to “let the gritty reality of this world into their lives, so they can learn to feel it, think about it critically, respond to its suffering, and engage it constructively.” Student leadership teams work hard year-round to prepare students and fundraise to make trips possible. Formation includes 3 meetings to learn about our trips’ 7 pillars: Service, Solidarity, Justice, Simplicity, Sustainability, Community and Reflection. Students participate in community-identified service and education projects during their Fall and Spring week-long breaks. They reflect together each night using a version of St. Ignatius’ Examen. Upon their return students are invited to participate in weekly service in the Omaha community, Ignatian Advocacy Groups, the Ignatian Family Teach-in for Justice in Washington D.C. and our leadership formation.
