Abstract

Here is a large-format (9¼" x 11¾) presentation of Goethe's verse with 20 lithographs by Steinel, who signs the colophon. The lithographs are strong, after the pattern of people like Hegenbarth and Hoffmann. Among the best of them are "The Bear Caught" (17); "Renard and the Cat" (24); "The Horse and the Wolf" (81); and WC (104). In addition, the woodcuts covering Renard's attack on the hare and Renard's final fight are bold. They exploit the medium well!
