Abstract
This is a very happy find. It is more extensive than Hachette's 1950 Album Rose version. Very good color presentation throughout the 48 pages. Many of the features I noted there are already true in this larger and longer version. For example, neither tortoise nor hare has a proper name. The hare appears in the frontispiece like a champion athlete in a robe and cincture. Snails accompany the tortoise along the route. In this French book, the starter's box has a title "Starter" (covers; 10). The racing features a roll down a hill by the tortoise and showing off by the hare for the rabbit girls at their "pensionnat." The hare's antics here are surprisingly late in the story (31-43). At the end, the book quotes La Fontaine's moral: "rien ne sert de courir, il faut partir a point" even though that is not really the issue in this race! 7¼" x 9".
