Abstract
There are twelve stories here on 176 brittle pages. As the title-page announces, "Each tale contains a moral, and no doubt/You all have wit enough to find them out." I read "Maggie's Wish" (32-47). It is a story of Maggie's petulant wish to have clothes as pretty as her little friend's. She would be willing to give up eating for a week if she could have clothes like Helen's. As she goes out and lies down for a nap, she encounters three ugly witches underground who offer her all sorts of clothes but refuse to feed her. She wakes up happy to be called in to get something to eat. These stories seem to be not fables but didactic stories involving magic and heavy morals. As for illustrations, I notice the frontispiece, which illustrates "Maggie's Wish," and only 59's illustration for "The Ambitious Violet" and 135's for "A Summer's Concert." Not in Bodemann. I cannot find the name of the pseudonymous Leal.
