Abstract
Nineteenth century America offered few opportunities for adult education and cultural enrichment until two movements emerged—the Lyceum and the Chautauqua. They developed separately and yet were closely intertwined. Both movements were at one time widespread over the nation and were considered permanent and extremely significant institutions of popular education.
