Introduction: Creighton Memorial St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing is an integral part of Nebraska's oldest and largest hospital and the third largest private institution for the sick west of the Mississippi River. The School, under the direction of The Poor Sisters of St. Francis Seraph, has maintained uninterrupted service in education since its beginning in 1899 as a school for Sister-student nurses and in 1917 as a center for secular students. A Christian philosophy of education permeates the curriculum of Creighton Memorial St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, reflecting the dedication of each student to the service of Christ through inexhaustible love and patience with the poor, sick and suffering. The student nurse lives in an environment wherein there is an expectation of excellence in performance and achievement. Guided by this philosophy, each student develops a personal and professional growth needed for Christian social living. Recognizing their continuing responsibility to provide the environment and the opportunities necessary to acquire these ideals, The Poor Sisters of St. Francis Seraph are providing one of the largest and finest nurses residences and educational units in the entire nation.
