Abstract

"Faisant Partie du Course Complet d'Études Élementaires." "Sujets Tirés de la Fontaine par le mème auteur." I presumed that this little (3¼" x 5¼") book accompanied one of those cards with multiple slots for arranging a fable scene out of little cut-out characters. To my surprise, it is rather a curricular exercise in raising and answering questions about fables, whose texts are also given here. After a set of instructions, there are one or more questions about 81 numbered fables. There are, for example, four such questions for the second fable, "The Ass Carrying Relics" (ix). After xxviij, pagination switches to Roman numerals as the 81 fables are presented. On 84 we find a list of maxims, proverbs and thoughts not presented in these 81 fables. Pages 87-96 present "Mots des Fables à expliquer aux enfants," followed by four pages outlining the whole major and minor curricula by this author. The last of these pages gives the place of the fable game in both curricula.
