Abstract

This is a curious find. I take it that Gallo or Mitaw is a language spoken between the Loire and Vilaine. What we have here is thirty of La Fontaine's fables presented each in two different ways. First comes an interlinear presentation of French and Gallo, apparently a fresh retelling of La Fontaine's fable. Then comes La Fontaine's standard text. As with all such ventures, it can be exciting for a "foreign" reader to catch the portion that he or she can understand in the different text. One surprise here is that there is apparently a series of books of fables in various languages and dialects: "Le Fabuliste Averti." In fact, I just ordered "Fablenormand." Surprise indeed!
