FIRST PARAGRAPH(S)|A few prenotes are in order prior to my substantial presentation. First, I have entitled my remarks a Catholic perspective, not the Catholic perspective. I do this not because there is not an official Catholic perspective. There is. It is presented briefly in Donum vitae ("Instruction on Respect for Human Life in its Origin and on the Dignity of Procreation"). Rather, I do it because the theologian's task is not simply to repeat official formulations, but to assimilate them critically so that the very assimilative effort contributes to the purification of these formulations. To say anything else would be to wrap these formulations in a non-historical immobility that is untrue to reality...
