Abstract

Principally there are only two, generally used procedures for the determination of the nitrogen content in organic substances, the Dumas and Kjeldahl methods. While the volumetric determination of nitrogen by the Kjeldahl analysis is applicable to many substances, particularly those containing aminoid nitrogen, and is attractive because of its simplicity, it is unreliable for the determination of nitrogen In certain materials, notably highly nitrated compounds and compounds containing nitrogen to nitrogen and nitrogen to oxygen single bonds. Thus the applicability of this procedure, without the introduction of reducing agents, is limited to amines, amino acids, ureas, thio ureas, certain proteins, and acid amides.
