Abstract
Finding this lovely old edition has convinced me to open a small Reynard section in my collection. See Lindseth's notes on the first edition. That has a frontispiece and thirty-five plates; this has thirty-six plates and numerous woodcut head and tail pieces. Originally (?) sold by William Schmidt in Baltimore. Damaged front endpaper and beginning pages. Gothic script. Heavily foxed. Fables are illustrated on 52, 122, 158, and 161. The illustrations show a delightful humanizing of trees (e.g. 23). My favorite illustrations include 2 (originally frontispiece?), 38, 46, 92, 142, and 211.
