Abstract
My thesis is a compilation of poems, essays, and short stories that I wrote and revised during my time as a Master of Fine Arts Student at Creighton University. |When I started Creighton’s MFA program, I had some experience with writing, but not enough to my liking. I was always more of a reader. In my program, I learned the importance of reading and writing daily and how vital it is vital to write and read deeply. I learned to write closer to my final draft in quality when writing my first draft. It is also essential to read substantial works that challenge you, so you can use what you’re consuming to grow as a writer. |I learned from my Professors’ and classmates’ lessons, writing, and examples. The most important concept I learned is that writing is hard and that the best writing comes slowly. What sets the best writing apart from the rest is that it is clear, precise, elegant, and beautiful. |I began the program as someone who wanted only to write genre fiction, but after taking prose and poetry courses, my tastes changed and matured. I now enjoy expressing myself through poetry, where before I honestly did not know how to create a good poem. While I still like writing genre fiction, I learned to love literary fiction more. I also found that I love writing creative non-fiction and essays. Writing about real things comes more naturally than writing about monsters or aliens. |I still have a long way to go, but writing is a marathon, not a sprint. I’ve taken steps, and I’ll continue on my path, and I will see where it takes me.
