Abstract
This critically appraised paper examines the effectiveness of the Developmental, Individual Differences, Relationship-Based (DIR)/Floortime play therapy intervention in improving social skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Synthesizing evidence from multiple studies, including Level 1A, 1B, and 2B evidence, this paper highlights that DIR/Floortime demonstrates positive effects on social participation, parent-child interactions, and potentially reduces parental stress. Furthermore, implementation of DIR/Floortime at home is associated with improved quality of life for individuals with ASD and their families, as well as advancements in activities of daily living, emotional development, and a reduction in stereotypical behaviors. The findings support the integration of DIR/Floortime into occupational therapy practice in both clinical and community settings, emphasizing the role of occupational therapists in educating caregivers on this play-based approach. While acknowledging the need for further research to optimize implementation and explore long-term impacts, this paper underscores the potential of DIR/Floortime as a valuable tool for enhancing social engagement and overall functioning in youth with ASD.
