Abstract

There is some fascinating history here. First, this is the 11,001st book in the collection! I had not noticed #11000's number while cataloguing it. Secondly, this book comes from Willy Aractingi's daughter, June Nabaa, from Paris. Somewhere I had found a link to www.aractingiwilly.com, presumably in Lebanon. I tried to buy a complete set of postcards and noticed several of his books that I did not yet have. I was disappointed to learn that they did not have a set of the cards and that the contemplated two volumes completing the La Fontaine illustrations never saw the light of day. But the second volume of "Esope et Jean de La Fontaine" was available, as well as this volume. It is uniform in format with his two books devoted to La Fontaine's Books 1 through VI, but was done earlier. June guesses for it a date of 1992. The 60 illustrations are identical in format with those in the two later volumes, but the fables here are not identified by book and number, and they are not limited to the first six books. I enjoy MSA (XVI); "The Bear and the Gardener" (XXXVII); "Acorn and Pumpkin" (XXXIX); and "The Mountain Giving Birth" (LV).
