Abstract
This very unusual book fell into my hands as I reviewed shelves of Märchen and fairy tales at Kitzinger. Since I have had my eye peeled for versions of Renard, I decided to include it in the collection. It turns out that the Renard figure in the main Malaysian offering here is a dwarf deer. His exploits cover the first 128 pages of the book and include full-page black-and-white illustrations on 9; 35; 45; 63; 91; and 111. Perhaps the most helpful of the illustrations is the frontispiece, the central figure from which is repeated on the cloth cover: the dwarf deer, with beads in hand and spectacles on his forehead, reads a book. Does the story of this trickster correspond with specifics of the Renard traditions?
