Brer Rabbit Saves His Skin
Alternative Title
Abstract
There are several adventures of Brer Rabbit in this short children's book. He got into the well because the bucket looked like a cool place to take a nap. He was surprised when the bucket went down. Brer Rabbit told Brer Fox that there was great fishing in the well, and so escaped the well. The second adventure brought him, still in search of a nap, to a hollow tree with a hole at the top and bottom. Brer Bear came along and thought immediately that Brer Rabbit was hiding something in the tree. Brer Rabbit was surprised to look up and see that in the tree was a honeycomb full of bees. He got out of the tree as fast as he could, only to be caught by Brer Bear. The latter wanted to know what was in that tree. "Honey!" Brer Bear got honeycomb – and a whole lot of bees! Soon Brer Bear, thirsty, wanted water from the well. He was surprised to crank up Brer Fox! Now both Brer Bear and Brer Fox wanted to trick Brer Rabbit. They dug a hole in the road and filled it with sticky syrup but then realized that they needed to cover it with straw. While they were away, Brer Rabbit came by and fell right into the hole. Brer Rabbit rolled in all sorts of stuff to get the sticky syrup off. He was furious. Brer Fox and Brer Bear came upon him and were frightened by this "wild beast." They ran away, but the next day they set a trap for the "wild beast" they had encountered the day before. Brer Rabbit taunted them and led them into their own net-trap set for him. The book is fun. Might it have been originally a short Disney film? Originally published in Denmark.
