Abstract

One of the nicest finds in our visit to Prague. Do not miss the cover of both the dust-jacket and the book's own cover. The former is a lion decked out with boots, sword, beard, and fancy three-cornered hat. This figure is in fact a detail from "Lion and Ass" (29). The latter may be a recumbent Aphrodite with a crocodile head weeping tears. I cannot find here – or online -- the original for this striking illustration. I love Effel's work! The 24 full-page colored illustrations are very nicely printed here. Among the most impressive are FS (frontispiece); GA (8); FG (43); "The Wolf and the Lamb Behind the Door" (62); TH (85); "Animals in the Plague" (90); "The Hermit Rat" (96); and "The Goat, Sheep, and Pig" (116).
