Abstract
Here is the best find from my short time in Portugal. Though it is published in Paris, it is published by and for Portuguese speakers. The publisher is described as "Livreiros de suas Majestades o Imperador do Brasil e a Reinha de Portugal." This landscape book with its 21 beautiful illustrations laid in on special paper is not in Bodemann. "Mocidade" seems to refer primarily to youth. The word seems to have taken on some fascist coloring in the middle of the twentieth century. I find no identifying marks on the 21 illustrations, but they are beautiful! Each has a page number under the illustration and above the title to indicate the place for its insertion into the book; not all printers were as careful as these to get the illustrations where they belong! They occur about every 6 or eight pages until they stop after 131. La Fontaine seems to be the fabulist of choice. Images include "Fox and Goat"; FC; OR; TB; FS; "Lion & Mosquito"; WL; "Bitch and Company"; " "Death and Woodgatherer"; "Wolves and Sheep"; "Wolf and Goat"; "Wolf Become Shepherd"; "Pedant and Drowning Boy"; "Angler and Little Fish"; FK; "Astronomer and Well"; CW; FM; OF; "Wolf and Fox before Monkey Judge"; and GA. 8" x 5". 196 pages.
