Abstract

This book fits between two already in the collection. We have the original 1947 version by Simon and Schuster, and we have the 1992 reprint by Western Publishing. Now this is an earlier Western Publishing reprint, printed not in Malaysia but in Singapore. I will reproduce comments I made on that 1992 reprint. This Golden Book has ninety-two pages for twenty-three stories taken from Disney materials, especially "Song of the South." The dialect is strong but easily handled. The art is vintage Disney. Stories I enjoyed and/or found new on this trip through included "Brer Bear an de Bag Full of Turkeys" (17), "Doctor Rabbit Cures de King" (19), "Why de Cricket Fambly Lives in Chimbleys" (23), "How Craney-Crow Kept His Head" (33), and "Brer Rabbit's Money Machine" (39). The observation of the crane in his new territory that all the birds here take off their heads at night is spectacular! Uncle Remus stories are always fun!
