Abstract

Elizabeth J. Goltra's journal recounts her 1853 journey across the plains from Kansas, Missouri, to the Willamette Valley in Oregon, ending on September 29, 1853. This historical account is now housed in the University of Oregon Libraries collection after its return in 2023. The journal was among the items stolen from the University of Oregon in 1988 as part of a larger theft of rare books and manuscripts from Academic Libraries spanning North America. The FBI, with the aid of Creighton University Librarians and other volunteers were able to locate many of the rightful owners as part of "The Omaha Project". The small percentage of materials whose ownership could not be identified, were given to Creighton University Archives and Special Collections. Creighton Archivist Pete Brink rediscovered the Goltra journal in 2023, ensuring its return to the University of Oregon Archives, where it serves as a testament to the resilience of its author and the ongoing preservation of cultural heritage.
