Abstract
Here is an inexpensive three-number volume from a series of inexpensive literature in the mid 1900's. Marbach's "Reineke" is divided into four books, each with multiple chapters. The verses -- 6844 of them -- are shorter than Goethe's. As might be expected of an ephemeral book from 1840, the book is fragile! The seller identifies the artist as Ludwig Richter. There are perhaps 15 illustrations. The strongest may be the one repeated on the cover: Reynard appears before King Lion's court (65). My favorite occurs somewhat surprisingly at the very end (255), though it refers back to 47: the priest squats in pain and his mistress grieves as Hinz the cat escapes after maiming the priest. Other good illustrations include Reynard playing possum (127) and swiping his tail across Isegrim's face (236). 261 pages, including illustrated advertisements at the back. 4½" x 7½".
