Abstract
Here is another beautiful piece of ephemeral work saved from the trash bin! Some 70 years ago about six people cooperated on a work of love that showed their professional competence as artists and printers. Well done! The presentation of the fables bilingually in the verse of La Fontaine and of Mayr proceeds in alternating lines of different colors, sizes, and typefaces. Each fable has its own two-page spread. On the left is the two-color linocut, with only the German title above and the French title below. Several of the cuts are signed by their artists -- perhaps by hand in each copy? Among my favorites are "The Lion Become Old"; "The Mountain Giving Birth"; and "The Lobster and Her Daughter." Do not miss the last little "tailpiece" of two mice dancing. A crowned lion-king graces the front cover. The burnt umbra of the cuts reappears in the French text on the right-hand page. 6" x 9½".
