FIRST PARAGRAPH(S)|One of the great values of the law is stability. Lawyers and judges are devoted to precedent, to existing practice, sometimes even to the extent of being hidebound. We all believe, or at least we say, that ours is a government of laws and not of people, that the identity of the judges should not affect the outcome of cases. Still less should individual judges change their own minds about legal propositions. Once your judicial mind is made up, you should stay hitched. Precedents should not be like railroad tickets, good for one day and one train only...
